At a doctor’s office, health concerns are diagnosed before the doctor recommends a course of treatment. The same process applies with mental health services. Our clinicians need to understand the issues, concerns, or problems through a diagnostic assessment before recommending a treatment plan. During the diagnostic assessment, our clinicians collect a comprehensive history including information on development, culture, mental health, physical health, school, work, and other important life areas. Additionally, our clinicians, with permission from each person and/or guardian, may consult with other providers to make the best possible determination. A diagnostic assessment is required prior to beginning therapy, skills, and case management services.
At times, individual and families may seek a more in-depth assessment. Fernbrook Family Centers offers complete psychological assessments for this purpose. Psychological assessments include testing to assess cognitive abilities, functional skills, academic skills, developmental delays, and behavioral and personality functioning. The findings of a psychological assessment may assist in developing treatment plans, building realistic expectations for progress, and determining referrals needed for additional services.
Diagnostic assessments are available at all Fernbrook Family Center locations.
